If I had to cook a big holiday meal for people this week, I’d lose it. Fortunately, I have a good friend and a good restaurant, an unbeatable combination for Thanksgiving. Also we both have dogs we will be introducing in an after-dinner stroll. Nothing but good times, people. (I do realize that Thanksgiving this week is American, not international, but for me it kicks off the insanity that is December celebration–“Oh, goody, the days are getting shorter”–which leads to me snarling at elves on the shelves and other who-thought-THAT-was-a-good-idea events. Bah humbug.)
What made you/is making you happy this week?

There is also the bring dinner in approach.
I’m thankful that DH will cook the turkey, I will cook one side dish and one dessert, and my neighbor will do the rest even though her husband is recovering from open heart surgery. I can just about manage two dishes since I can do a lot over time and sitting down. DH doesn’t return from Europe until late Wednesday; if he runs into delays the plan is the neighbor sends over her young adult kids to do all the lifting for me and I roast the turkey in the oven. (No DH doesn’t boil it in peanut oil, that exciting recipe for intensive care; he cooks it in our big green egg. That’s a giant porcelain green egg oven, which is really excellent also for fish and grilled chicken and smoking food and ribs. Comes in a range of sizes; ours can handle an 18 pound turkey but no more!)
I am probably happy for other things but as my next task is somewhat painful pre surgery therapy I forget what. I imagine I will be back.
My happy this week is that I finally had all new kitchen cupboards installed yesterday. And they’re blue! My entire first floor is a disaster with everything from old cupboards piled higgeldy-piggeldy until I repack them. But now just want to sit in my kitchen and stare at my cupboards all day. Surely this isn’t natural.
Congratulations, Tammy!
Sounds pretty normal to me!
Sounds exactly right to me!
Yay! And higgeldy-piggeldu is a great word I haven’t heard in a while.
Feel free to make use of it anywhere/time you like.
One of mama’s sayings. Will have to say it in front of the granddaughters.
Ooh, I picked out a shade of deep blue to paint my cabinets two summers ago, but haven’t done it yet. You’re inspiring me to make it a priority for warmer weather in 2026! Just need to find someone to take the doors off for me and then put them back on (too much awkward bending for me to do it myself).
My husband was incredibly sceptical of the colour – especially since we have a large red painting in our kitchen already but I thought the contrast would be dramatic and it is – and he likes it!
Ooh, we’re really on the same wavelength. I picked out the red for accents at the same time I picked out the blue. Great to hear how well it’s worked out for you!
I’m getting a red retro microwave to continue the theme, Gin.
Jealous of the red microwave!
Wait — they actually SELL red microwaves??? This might change everything!!!
Sounds normal to me!
My next kitchen will have blue cabinets. I have envy!
My patios and sidewalks are covered with leaves, again, after I raked them off last Thursday. We had a blessed rain, since then. We needed it, badly.
I am happy that my youngest son and his family will be visiting after New Year’s. I had planned to fly out to see them in October, but wouldn’t have been able to manage that. The whole fam damily is gathering at his house in Phoenix Thursday and I’m so happy to miss that circus. They send me photos every year, and the table is almost too long to photograph. There will be four more (from KC) at that table this year! Being an introvert, I avoid gatherings like that, especially with a sprinkle of tRump supporters mixed in. Happy Tday, everyone!
There really out to be a word for the joy one experiences when having a completely acceptable reason not to attend an unwelcome social occasion.
Bunbury Joy? From “the Importance of Being Earnest”
Good one!
Oh I like it!
I worked a few hours on the flower farm, helping my boss clear out the 100ft plastic hoop house. We’ve had below zero temps since the beginning of November but there were still flowers in bloom. I took home big bundles of snapdragons and lissies. They’re starting to fade but I’ve enjoyed having fresh farm flowers in the house. Plus I got to play in the dirt.
I potted up my amaryllis bulbs. Found 3 in my basement that had green on them – we’ll see if they flower. My Thanksgiving cactus are starting to bloom, including one that was my mother’s. It’s 10 years old and I’m always happy to see it flower. A link to my mom.
Had lunch with a friend I don’t see very often. She volunteers at a women’s shelter. They provide gifts for women and children for Christmas and are happy to accept donations. I have 2 plastic bins of gifts that I bought but never gave so happy to go through it and share.
How lovely.
My happy this week is that our (limited) basement remodel is finished! Like Tammy, my house is a disaster zone because everything we kept (its a finished basement) is all over the house — for example I have a mattress from the guest room currently gracing our dining room. But the new floor is gorgeous and the newly painted walls are splendid and the new lighting is awesome. I can’t wait to start moving things back in slowly. The added benefit of this exercise is that we death-cleaned along the way and there is A LOT less stuff to put back. Heaven!
Plus you could take this as an opportunity to find out what sleeping in your dining room feels like.
Yes indeed! With Thanksgiving coming right up I have proposed we wait until Friday before moving that mattress so we can roll right on to it from the table once the Thanksgiving feast is done! And its a big mattress — could fit quite a few of us for that nap!
And if you have a TV in front of it, you can all watch Heated Rivalry together. I imagine that will liven the Thanksgiving conversation up quite a bit.
My big little win is that I found my headphones this morning. The earbud case was in my pocket one Sunday and then it was gone, leaving me with one earbud. So annoying. Anyway, I was digging through jean jackets in my mess of a sunroom this morning for my last commission of the year and there it was! Must have fallen out the last time I was looking for jackets.
Everything else is chaos and I am not thinking about.
Oh, and my Ghibli advent calendar came and it’s adorable and I can’t wait to open it. No regrets on splurging on the big one. The box itself will get reused forever.
What’s in it?
Exactly what I want to know too.
But the outside is so cute!
https://www.kindakawaii.com/products/studio-ghibli-advent-calendar-2025
I am even excited about the box.
That looks like a lot of fun!
Even I think that’s adorable.
I don’t know yet. I was so excited that it was coming and then it arrived and I still can’t open it, dammit. I will wait for December. It’s supposed to be various Ghibli movie characters in jewelry and knick knacks.
I have decided to make Kevin a homemade one of stickers, since he bought a cheap, ugly bike and is joking about covering it with stickers. I have some fun, naughty ones that come in my mailings from CM Nascosta’s Patreon but I need to gather more and quickly, since the idea came to me last night. Anyone have artists or comics who make funny stickers?
What about Worldbuilders? The authorized site for Murderbot merch. I just went to check that they have stickers, and they have a lot.

Happiness is going to a friend’s apartment for Thanksgiving. He cooks the whole meal every year whether he has company or not, so all I have to bring is my homemade cranberry sauce and a bottle of prosecco. Plus he makes most things the day before so we can eat early enough that I can drive home while it is still light out.
Happiness has been having an author friend from Florida here for an extended visit (it will be 2 and a half weeks by the time she leaves on Wednesday, and she was also here for a week at the end of October). She was planning on spending more of her fall trip to the Northeast with other people, but one set got sick and another friend wasn’t in the mood for as long a visit as they’d planned, plus she discovered she gets a lot of writing done at my house, so I got her. Yay! I usually get tired of guests after about, oh, three hours, but for whatever reason we’re doing just fine. She’s been helping me with videos for TikTok (ugh) and is going to take some new author photos before she leaves. I’ll miss her, but I suspect happiness will also be getting my house back.
In the meanwhile, my witchy gang is coming over this afternoon for a Yule craft project, since we didn’t manage to get together at Samhain. I baked my mom’s rum cake and made a pasta salad, and now I’m too tired to do the actual craft…but I’m sure it will be fun anyway.
I’ve been waiting to hear from my godson, and he just sent me pictures of his new baby, born on 11/11, a gorgeous little boy and a super photo of his daughter, Kate holding her new brother.
At work, some legacy stuff appears to have genuinely been resolved, although will cross fingers until the end of this term, and we had a really lovely christmas bazaar. I was nervous, as both the Luxembourg Christmas markets started this week, and the International Christmas Bazaar is on, but our gluhwein was, I suspect, much cheaper, our 7-11 choir performed beautifully and the weather was super cold, super crisp and bright, so we had a really good turnout.
And Minion 1, aged 28, is thinking hard about how to get his life on track.
Finally, am really enjoying The Rose Field, Philip Pullman’s final volume of the Books of Dust.
Nothing but good times ahead.
Found your blog, and I love it. My Thanksgiving gift, thank you very much.
I am happy that we will soon have the Drifters and White Christmas.
I did my Christmas shopping – spurred by my brother, niece & nephew coming to stay this weekend. So I’ve been able to buy some unpostable presents for a change. It’s amazing to have nothing but the cards left to do. I’m hoping I can finish my big workroom sort-out now and start the new year with a clean slate.
It was good to see the family, especially my great-niece, now eight months old and keen to interact.
I’m keeping the peace in nanowrimo to hit 50k by the end of the month. I have this whole week off, which will help with that and with maybe getting some Christmas done. And with relaxing a little, I hope!
Keeping the peace in nanowrimo actually made sense, but hitting 50k clued me in that it was autocorrect for pace.
Lol. Yes. Pace.
My phone randomly selects whatever word it wants. (For example, it chose “reaction” instead of “randomly”). I proofread, but didn’t always catch it
My sf book club used to meet monthly in the snacks section of a now-vanished bookstore, but one ?November? evening we found that nanowrimo had taken the entire place over. Not only was there no seating left, but as I recall, the noise level was a bit boisterous. Maybe not in need of peacekeeping and as a dull roar, maybe not an impediment to writing. We moved to a cafe nearby and learned to change venue that month in future years.
I’m happy that there will be at least three different things for Thanksgiving this year which came from the garden. No, wait, four. I’ve got some lettuce growing in a planter that was on my deck but got brought indoors a couple of weeks ago. Plus swiss chard still in the garden. And green tomatoes that I’m going to make into either jam or cake (collected the recipes in anticipation of an avalanche of greenies, but haven’t had a chance to try them yet and haven’t decided which one to try now). And I already have green tomato mincemeat that, if I make green tomato cake can be a topping for that. Or maybe I’ll make the jam as a gift for people to take home and then I can make mini cheesecakes (made in muffin tins) with the mincemeat on top.
I’m also happy that my replacement quilting foot (for my sewing machine, not for me, personally, although if they made easily swap-outable human feet, it would probably improve my quilting and many other aspects of my life). It’s actually nicer than the one I broke, really hefty and well-designed, so I’m glad I didn’t cheap out and instead splurged on the five-times-the-cost (and also five times the weight because it’s all metal) original-manufacturer version instead of a knockoff.
And the same day I got the quilt foot, I also got the yarn I ordered to make hats: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-stare
Soo cute! I love those cat stares!
My gosh yes!
Oh my gosh, that is the cutest
I try to get my Thanksgiving turkey breast in early, since in many years choice dwindles later. Unfortunately Thursday before last the only choices at the store I was at were big turkeys or turkey rolls. I might have tried a different store but circumstances brought me back there last Thursday and they had several kinds of breasts by then and had restocked their Stovetop stuffing. So now I’m fully prepared. although I may do a Lidl run this week and if so will pick up mushroom soup and celery options I hadn’t realized I was out of. If I don’t go I can easily make do without.
Patrick can’t you reserve one? We reserve a turkey but I’m pretty sure we could reserve a turkey breast and specify the weight
My happy this week was a call I just had with my sister about plans for Thanksgiving and her birthday. We are going to our friend Harriet’s for Thanksgiving and for the first time Harriet wouldn’t let me bring anything. I had planned to make a Pumpkin Cheesecake Tart, as usual, but Harriet won’t let me. The thing is that H had just finished saying that now that she is 80 she no longer has the energy and that this is her last year hosting. Fine. But why won’t she let me help? We’ve been friends for 30 years and she can’t accept any help from me? It is not as if she doesn’t know I can cook and bake. My sister may be the Queen of All Pies, but I learned to cook the same place she did.
When I talked to my sister, she filled me in on some of the turmoil that Harriet and her husband are going through and I finally understood what was really going on. We then went on to the question of what kind of birthday cake and present she wanted. She told me that her Minnesota daughter would be in town for a few days before her birthday and I was overjoyed to hear that. I have been thinking about Annie quite a bit lately and it will be a joy to see her. I asked her if she wanted a Pumpkin Cheesecake Tart as a birthday dessert and she and I decided that we would have a “birthday experience” this year instead of a present because her apartment is bursting at the seams right now. I think this is a FABULOUS idea because neither she nor I have done anything just for fun in a long time.
I decided that what I want for the holidays is a photo album of all my kids Halloween costumes over the years. We made them all and some were really creative. I also want their college essays because they were really personal and telling about who they were at that age. I particularly want the one DS wrote for a school that prides itself on making leaders about why he doesn’t want to be a leader because he has felt like that since he was 5 and turned down the lead in the school play. (He got in the college, btw.)
I love the birthday experience idea. I had to get kinda’ mean and emphatic to wonderful friends/family who insisted on giving me birthday/holiday gifts after I declared a moratorium about ten years ago. My rule was that I honestly preferred nothing more than an email to let me know they were thinking of me, and if they absolutely had to do a gift, it had to be a consumable, so, e.g., my Florida brother sends me oranges every December, and my TX brother sends me some local delicacies, and a friend once sent me a huge bag of Dr. Pepper jelly beans (I have a well-known addiction to Dr. Pepper), which made me laugh (and then made me a wee bit sick from eating too many of them). But nothing tangible that won’t be consumed within a few weeks.
I agree that experiences are wonderful. But this year I’m not really mobile for them.
Gin, I feel the same way, since I’m trying to clear out junk, and I already have everything I need, or if I don’t, I can order it from Amazon.
Yeah, I got to the point where I was finding new homes for about 90% of what I was getting for Christmas, because I just didn’t have a use for any of it, and that seemed silly. After I said enough, it took a while, but I think last year, I only re-gifted ONE thing, and that was because, despite being an appropriate consumable, and something I like a lot, I can’t eat it due to a medication I’m on which interacts with it badly.
“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” Oscar Wilde
As usual, most of my happiness is about getting sh*t done. Gallery wall done in the media room. Other artwork hung in other places. Vintage mirror from DH’s family hoard hung downstairs. Big gaudy mirror hung in my room. More shopping done as the Moving In & Claiming Space is far from over.
Also a couple more winetasting hours with the parents (these were prompted by their acquisition of the Wall Street Journal wine advent calendar, which came with a bazillion little bottles, which ended up in *our* space) which have been good for checking-in and general chit-chat. We see them most days, but not to sit down and talk. So that’s nice. Once the little bottles are gone, we’ll have to replicate the experience with other bottles!
And I did my first crafty thing in a very long time, which involved dressing an iron candelabra with my collection of ojime beads. I think it’s cute. 🙂
Plus looking ahead to a three-day workweek, a four-day holiday weekend, and Thanksgiving dinners two days in a row (we are hosting the first, my sibling is hosting the second).
I’ve always been curious about wine advent calendars. Was the wine any good?
So far, they’ve all been eminently quaffable!
chacha1, it’s because of you (your writing) that I know what a big deal the Ohio Star ballroom competition is, so that I can have an appropriate level of happiness about my co-worker’s return to ballroom after ten years absence. She did not place very high, but she did better than some. (She’s 55, and race-walks ultramarathons, so she’s amazing in many ways.)
Ha! One of my libraries just acquired Slayers of Old and I was able to borrow the ebook without going on queue. Of course, I can’t get distracted by too much other reading since I don’t anticipate being able to renew the loan.
Patrick, I just finished it and it was fabulous.
The earlier mention of Oscar Wilde made me laugh remembering his last words before he died; “This wallpaper is killing me. Either it or I must go.” LOL
I got through a rewatch of Dark Winds season 1 & 2 so I could watch season 3. Very good all the way through. I am now infatuated with Kiowa Gordon. Yum. Of course, Zach McClarnon & A. Martinez always do a great job of acting & are easy on the eyes as well.
I am off work & will be until the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Then I have a full work week plus which included some double time & a half. I actually enjoy working the holidays. Also I don’t start until 5 at night on Thanksgiving so plenty of time for a good meal with my daughter before work. We still haven’t decided what to eat or where to order from.
It’s almost 5pm here in Florida & I want to head outside & catch the sunset. The weather here has been perfect for days now.
Happy I found a good gift for a friend, good fuzzy socks, (which I always send to my niece from Christmas) and what may prove to be a small, relatively entertaining craft project for Christmas afternoon.
Happy for a three day week, and what looks to be a pleasant, relaxed Thanksgiving with enough people to be festive and not enough to be exhausting.
I love that the biggest thrill for the elf bounty hunter in Baldree’s new book is “dry socks”.
I’m happy that I’m recovering from the nasty cold I caught from Paul who caught it from one of the guys he carpooled with to the municipalities conference. I’m also happy he’s recovering since he was much more miserable than I was with it. He’s on medication to keep his blood pressure down and can’t take most cold medicines so he was really miserable for a few days there.
I’m also happy that it’s not yesterday. Yesterday was a crazy workday. About 40 minutes after we opened, the card reader on the first till went down for no apparent reason. So, we rebooted the entire system and now the computer won’t stay on. The second till, the one we hardly ever need to use, took a good 10 minutes to power up and let me log in. With an old password. When it promptly asked me to change my password, I put in my new one, it accepted it and said that my password was changed but then it would only take the old password.
While all of this is happening we have customers lining up and losing patience. There was much more Drama! at the Drugstore involving my manager kind of lying to her manager about needing a week off when she is actually going to be gone for 2 weeks, her not leaving me any instructions about some things that need doing while she is gone, and a potential staff issue.
During all of this my hearing is fading in and out because my head is so stuffy and at one point I’m sure I looked like I was losing my mind because I couldn’t hear my coworker talking to me. I really wanted to just lock the door and go home but Manager did that the day before because we were “short staffed” aka she wanted to go home and pack for her trip and didn’t bother to call the afternoon person to come in 2 hours early or ask the pharmacy tech to stay a bit longer when the pharmacist called out sick.
I did, however, learn that Paul and I are in a fun, happy Christmas light war with our neighbors across the street and one house down. The husband saw us putting our inflatables out last week and promptly went out and bought more decorations for his yard. We decided that it was fine because we both like lots of cheery lights and it makes it prettier and more fun for people at this dreary time of year.
I am fascinated by the drama in the drugstore. It sounds awful to live with but it’s fun to hear about.
OW Cherry, it looks like there are rough seas ahead for you. Good luck!
For the past few years, since my parents got too old to travel much, we have been joining them for Thanksgiving, and they liked going to a Thanksgiving buffet put on by a nice hotel. Before that they would come to our house and my wife, who loves to cook, would make the entire meal. But this year they decided even traveling to the hotel would be too much work because my dad would just be finishing proton therapy for cancer, so we’re ordering everything and picking it up to take back to my parents house.
They retired to Arkansas and we live in Michigan, and during Covid we started driving down there, 7 hours one day and 6 hours the next, in order to avoid potentially picking up a virus and passing it to my elderly parents. And now it’s apparently a ‘tradition’.
I’m happy that we’ll be doing Thanksgiving dinner this year, but unfair that I’ll be having to cook it. 😂
Yes, happiness is going out for Thanksgiving. My cousin and I will go to a nice family restaurant and then I can go home and chill. Her son may join us.
Last year he insisted on doing the turkey. She ended up doing some of the sides which was too much work. Thus her decision.
I realized that there are only four areas of clutter on my first floor that are dragging me down. I’ve broken them down into eight small pieces and am doing one a day. Four done and I feel better already.
Also, as previously noted, The Drifters are coming.
I heard them piped into a store yesterday.
Audrey, I’m thinking of getting out my Mixed Nuts DVD to play.
I have been enjoying watching the Grand Prix figure skating events. The last of 6 events was this weekend and now I am eagerly awaiting the Grand Prix Final in a couple of weeks.
I picked up my turkey a few days ago and it is thawing in the fridge. I couldn’t find a smaller one, so got a 14 pounder, which is fine as I love the leftovers and will freeze most of it, as well as make soup from the carcass.
I had to get an iron infusion last month because it turns out I have been wildly anaemic for (probably) the last few years. Which explains why even stopping by here has felt too hard, let alone doing the housework. I am now four weeks post-infusion and feeling like an actual human again. Apparently this is how other people feel all the time!
Yay for feeling better! So happy for you!
I had that feeling of OH WOW the day after the first night with the sleeping-aid Lorazepam 2.5 years ago. “Is this how normal people feel after a night’s sleep? Is THIS the level of non-anxiety? Waking up and NOT feeling dead IS a thing, after all?” Pity I can’t use it every night. Boo.
Thanks Shass! And I definitely feel that about the sleep. Whenever the doctor asks something like “do you feel more fatigued than normal?” I have to ask “what’s normal for a shift worker with chronic insomnia?” But apparently my answer should have been yes.
Oh I’m so glad! What a difference that can make.
Thanks Debbie! It’s amazing how much more I’m getting done all of a sudden.
I was diagnosed with anemia midway through a pregnancy and it was stunning how fast I felt better with iron. I hope they can figure out why you were anemic.
Wow, Georgia! That’s great!
Thanks Jan!
I can be quietly thankful for still being alive all by myself.
For Thanksgiving, I did Stouffer’s. Roast turkey and mashed potatoes. Turkey tetrazzini. Chicken salad. Chocolate. Diet Coke (decaf).
For Black Friday, I got groceries delivered.
And that’s good enough. 🙂
Happy to see this post!
Happy that i got to wear the incredible cat-scarf to the GP’s on Friday, and happy it was snug and warm, not just pretty.
Happy for anti-nausea-meds that help me sleep a bit better.
Happy for a call from my dear dear friend in England on Friday, talking about everything from what a breadroll is called in Swedish to the AI-guidebot I posted a link to the other day, to why some dishes have weird names and where they come from. Absolute gem. He also sent me huge amounts of long-distance reiki on Wednesday and Thursday, which I actually think did something because I did feel a little less anxious, and he only told me afterwards so I couldn’t anticipate. He deserves a care-package again one of these days.
Happy for a video of my niece chasing the cat. I can’t see it of course, but her absolute joy is an absolute joy. Her giggles make me happy.
Happy for old Astrid Lindgren-narrations. She had a truly great storyteller-voice.
Happy that my stepdad called me back on his birthday (he’d missed my call) so I could congratulate him. He and me and mum talked for an hour. I think this must’ve been the first time he called me since I moved to NL, and even if it was because I’d called him first, it made me happy.
Happy that Sven got a CPAP for his apneas, and doubly triply happy that he’s taken to it like Nanny Ogg to a bottle of beer and has slept with it 6 nights out of 7 the past week, remarking every morning on how much better and more rested he feels.
Relatively smallish but important happies.
Oh and PS-happy: Also happy for surprise-package from an old (literally and figuratively speaking) friend in Sweden, containing chocolate-covered marshmallow santas, a kind of tiny chocolate wafers and tea. I had no idea she’d send something, it was a complete surprise. Kind people make me happy.
The CPAP is not a small thing. The cumulative effect of getting better sleep will continue to grow for a while. And treating sleep apnea reduces your risk of heart attack significantly.
Well spotted and I stand corrected – the CPAP is not a small thing. I’m very proud of him and so very happy that it’s helping him already.
Since he has already had a heart-attack, I’m sure he’ll want to avoid another. Besides, sleep apnea allegedly also snacks off x hours/days/years of your life depending on the severity of them and how long they go untreated. I’m happy he listened this time when I suggested he have it checked and, well, had it checked.
The CPAP is a big win.
I love child giggles! There was an ad for a children’s charity last year that featured a laughing baby, and I watched it just for that moment. I should have given them money. I’m glad you were warm in your scarf, and Sven is sleeping better. Nothing but good times ahead!
Thanks Jan! <3 Child-giggles are one of the best sounds ever. I wish I could show you Freja, she is ADORABLE.
I’m happy that I’m in Denmark this week and that Jul is in full swing. This has been a miserable year and I feel the need for all the lights and all the decorations.
Normally I try to hold off on Xmas until after Thanksgiving, but it’s late this year, so I was happy to put up the balcony tree early.
I get the sense that as soon as Halloween was over this year many people went straight into Xmas mode. I salute them!
We’ll spend Thanksgiving driving from Copenhagen to Billund via Odense. Not sure what Thanksgiving dinner will be…
And when I get back, I will be 40 days from retirement, 10 of which will be weekends and 10 of which will be leave days.
Nothing but good times ahead!
In the US, I disapprove of moving from Halloween to Christmas without waiting for Thanksgiving, but abroad I say follow local custom and if Jul decorations are up in Denmark, go for it! In Canada I gather the start is a Christmas parade that happened yesterday.
When I drove outside the condo development today I saw that one house on my street has Christmas lights up already but at least it was a string of white ones, arguably “holiday” but not “Christmas.”
Today I learned that a thawed turkey (or part of it) will keep for several days in the fridge even if fully thawed. Since in some past years turkey breasts have not been completely thawed in 2 days despite directions I think I’ll start this one today just in case.
Good to know about the turkey. I’m going to go out and buy my turkey breast today. My biggest happy was rereading Agnes and the hitman. What a delight I’m also overjoyed to be casted in a colonial, Penn commercial and be on avail for a fox promo.
And Jennie, I’m so glad you’re going out with a friend and then you your friend and the dogs are having a memorial Thanksgiving walk
We have a heritage turkey on thaw in the fridge, the kind that came from somewhere Brit and now run the hills in North Carolina. Supposedly more mature, heavier bones and meatier. We shall see. I’ve been wanting to indulge for years, and given the nature of this year decided this is IT. Cranberry sauce is now ripening, tasting like sugarplum because I added an over-ripe plum and a good glug of cognac; sugar, of course; orange zest; pinch of cardamom, ginger powder and red chili pepper. Cheesy broccoli casserole gets done tomorrow. The rest is up to His Highness, although I found David Lebovitz’s luscious recipe for Butternut Squash Pie with buttermilk and cognac. Earlier today I read last week’s NYT account of Joan Didion’s Thanksgivings. She was meticulous–and also had Help. At any rate, I am spurred to cut red amaranth stalks to dot into the dried flower arrangement. Day after the day, out it goes (around since late summer) and in come the greens. Nothing–as has been observed earlier–but good times ahead!
I’m really happy that I have been doing Prehab —I can feel my leg getting stronger and I’m sure that will make recovery easier.
I am happy my niece visited for four days and spent most of her time at a conference. It was just enough time to catch up and get to know her better but not overwhelming.
I’m glad DH will be home tomorrow night but I’m enjoying a couple of days of being alone.
I am grateful I found a tactful way out of being a reference for someone that I have to keep working with.
I am happy I am making slow progress in decluttering the house. In another 5 years or so maybe we will have gotten rid of the stuff we will never use and have labeled all the family history stuff so the kids can eventually make informed decisions about whether they want to keep it. I have only a handful of old New Yorkers to go…
I am happy I found my daughter’s daily report card form for me that she created in maybe 2nd or 3rd grade rating me on things like patience, attention, allowing, and time for play. With a line for DH to sign to show he saw it. We must have been doing this with her teacher at school when she had behavior issues…
