Great Comfort Read on Sale for $1.99

If anybody here hasn’t read the Terry Pratchett Watch series, the first one, Guards Guards, is a deal right now on Amazon at $1.99. It’s one of my comfort reads and just wonderful, full of dragons and people fighting for good and evil and a wonderful hero who starts out in the gutter and a heroine who runs a dragon rescue. Oh, and there’s a six-foot dwarf just come in from the boonies to join the City Night Watch, and he’s memorized the rule book which nobody else in the city has bothered to read, including the rest of the Watch. More good news: Guards Guards is the first in an eight book series within the much larger Discworld series: Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Element, Night Watch, Thud, and Snuff.

It’s funny, it’s fast-paced, it’s heart-warming, it’s wonderful. In fact, I need to read it again now. MAJOR comfort read.

“Patchett demonstrates just how great the distance is between one- and two-joke writers and the comic masters whose work will be read into the next century.” —Locus

Magic, mayhem, and a marauding dragon combine for extraordinary fun in this cheeky Discworld novel from New York Times bestselling author Terry Pratchett.

Insurrection is in the air in the city of Ankh-Morpork. The Haves and Have-Nots are about to face off. Again.

It’s old news to Captain Sam Vimes of the city’s ramshackle Night Watch. But this time, something is different—the Have-Nots have found the key to a dormant, lethal weapon that even they can’t fully control, and they’re about to unleash a campaign of terror on the city.

Long believed extinct, a draco nobilis can now be seen patrolling the skies above Discworld’s greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, but it’s also soon crowned King.

Can Vimes, Captain Carrot, and the rest of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch restore order (before it’s burned to a crisp)?

The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Guards! Guards! is the 1st book in the City Watch collection and the 8th Discworld book.

  1. Oh yes, this is one of my favourites. Seeing Vimes pull himself together, and the glorious naivete that is Captain Carrot – I think I need a reread too.

  2. I love that book, Vimes first meeting Sybil was one of the best meetings ever. I’m going to add Discworld to the re-read list this year

  3. Pratchett is such a good writer. With such a great value system. And then there’s his snark:

“. . . focus on a young man heading for the city with all the openness, sincerity and innocence of purpose of an iceberg drifting into a major shipping lane.”

  4. Guards, Guards! is one of those books that I have bought multiple paperback copies of solely for the purpose of loaning them to other people. The Princess Bride is another one.

  5. One of my favourite books and authors . I read all the Guards books just before Chistmas the ultimate comfort reads.
