  1. I love, love, love the foodie stuff in your books*, so my sincerest thanks for your dedication to research!!!

*Reuben Sandwich, until then a totally unknown, is a staple since Fast Women.
As, curiously, are most of the dishes in this book (Nell and Gabe have put down incredibly deep roots with both me and dh…)

    1. I’ve been influenced by your books as well. My third submarine was forward-sited in Holyloch, Scotland, where one finds malt vinegar on the tables in fish & chips shops. Fast Women reminded me and renewed that habit. Bet Me caused me to switch from a diehard Dunkin fan to Krispy Kremes. I was a huge fan of mashed potatoes with gravy long before Manhunting but I love-love-LOVED that scene. (I also like the idea of stabbing a Donald with a fork. Could we get him to run for president of Paraguay?) I like pineapple orange stuff. Tangy.

Lunch today was boneless pork chops and brown rice with shallots and a diced jalapeño. Green tea. My after-lunch drink is Diet Coke (caffeine free). No research needed – I knew I’d like it all.

  2. Onion rings! I love ’em. But they don’t love me. I like to dip them in honey mustard salad dressing.

      1. Oh, good grief! On the long list of things Gary Can’t Pig Out On Anymore, a blooming onion, also called onion bloom, onion blossom, onion flower, bloomin’ onion, onion mum, Texas Rose, and other names at various places comes near the top. It’s a long list. Note – I didn’t say I couldn’t eat any, I said pig out on. Because if it is on the table, my will power becomes the power to write a last will and testament.

Even a small fast-food order of onion rings stretches the diet. The sodium! These things are thoroughly over-salted. And I love them.

  3. The take-out sandwich is chicken and portobello mushrooms with peppers. It’s insanely good warmed over, too.

  4. 11.99
    Chicken Portobello Sandwich
Grilled chicken, fire-roasted peppers, portobello mushrooms, melted mozzarella, and balsamic glaze served on your choice of bread. Includes French fries or pasta salad, coleslaw, and pickle
    Mine was on pita.

    Double Trouble Burger
Topped with fried portobello mushrooms, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and horseradish sauce.
    Onion Rings on the side.

      1. Jane, there is an American football team, I think it is the Green Bay Packers, that their fans wear cheese hats at the games.

  5. That sounds pretty darn good for a burger. But I just had gut surgery and it’s done strange things to my appetite. Sugar and fat suddenly don’t appeal. My partner brought me chocolate yesterday and I only had one small piece :-o. I’m not sure whether to hope this is a temporary effect or not.

    1. Reb, Good luck recuperating from your surgery! The initial days were painful for me and really weird when it came to taste. I was all excited about stopping extra strength Tylenol, but when I was free to drink wine again it tasted strange.

It turned out to be very temporary.

      Take care!

  6. Dinner: Two Atkins® Endulge® Chocolate Coconut Bars with 20 lightly salted almonds. Kinda sorta like eating Almond Joys®.

I need to do some research!

  7. FARM REPORT

The Genovese Basil Seed Pod in Jenny of New Jarsey has germinated. The sprout has grown nearly a millimeter above the level of the top of the seed pod, making it visible from the side.

  8. Saw the photo and thought at once of Cinderella Deal, Daisy saying, “I want a hamburger…I want french fries. I want onion rings. I want a large, large Coke. I want a chocolate milk shake. I want a hot fudge sundae.”
Glad you weren’t eating all of that at once!
