Working Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Today, I am working on my health by going to my GP for the first time in, uh, three or four years.  And then possibly finally getting some color in my bathroom.  I very practically made all the tile in there white because tile is difficult to change and I could add color other ways, but frankly it’s kind of meat-lockerish in there.  Then I thought about painting a border on the tile, but the whole room is a shower, so that’s not practical.  And then I had this BRILLIANT idea and bought tub stickies in bright colors and a lot of bright colored accessories and some yellow oilcloth and I am going to town on the meat locker today (slowly with much resting in between because still sick).  I also ordered some light blue grout dye, which I am slightly nervous about it but it won’t be here for awhile, so one thing at a time.

So what did you make this week?

  1. Good luck at the GP.

Ooh, bathrooms. I see how people put white subway tile in bathrooms and I don’t like it. So you’ve described part of my reaction well.

I have food Working Wednesday Pix. So yum, yum.

    1. I, on the other hand, love white – as much white as possible! – in bathrooms. Maybe it gives me the illusion that things are cleaner that way. Apparently I would be fine showering in a meat locker, as long as it’s a clean one ;-).

  2. Cookies! I feel like that’s always my answer. But I really like cookies and I’m pretty good at making them, if I do say so myself. 😉
Today younger son was involved. I have a sugar cookie recipe that I roll out between two sheets of parchment paper. I let him smash it Hulk style and then we smooth over together with the rolling pin. Honestly, being so rough with it may make the cookie texture a bit tougher, but after adding food dye and sprinkles, the kids don’t care.

On our agenda later today is a trip to indoor pool.

  3. I’m still working away at stuff. I am actually trying to work on the wall hangings I keep postponing working on because that is kind of a pain in the ass.

  4. I made a brisket! This is a totally new-to-me thing to cook, and for some reason making a super-tender and tasty one is my current obsession. I don’t have a smoker and our grill is doing scary things, so I’ve used the oven. I made attempt #2 for father’s day and got rave reviews from husband, daughter, and SIL. Now I have to decide whether I feel confident enough to make this for company in a few weeks.

Oh, and I’m making progress on my women’s fiction with romantic elements WIP, about to finish the first draft!

  5. I’m working on the yard and garden and trying to get ahead of a few outside chores. No pics because no one wants to see a pile if weeds! Maybe next week I’ll have a revamped flower bed to post. Also, laundry.

  6. Good for you going to the doc, I hope you get better asthma management. I had a massive attack in February and got on a new maintenance med as a result that has been a game-changer for me. Take it easy with the renovations, yay color.

  7. I’m back to working on getting a new job. I’m back to looking for a good opportunity and putting myself out there. Fingers crossed that something comes along at the right time.

  8. I’ve been doing family things and not making stuff. But, I’ve got a beginning weaving course coming up on Saturday! I’m excited!

  9. I’m still wading through Cromwell. Was enjoying the lull after Anne Boleyn was beheaded, but now we’re into rebellion in the north. Had been cheering myself by enjoying the frequent references to BL MS Cotton Cleopatra (I just like the name, especially because it’s due to the fact that the original collector stored his manuscripts in bookcases topped with classical busts, so there’s Cotton Titus and Cotton Nero as well). But then realized that not all the dots and commas in each reference had been styled the same . . .

I’m not managing much beyond the day job. My accounts are stalled, and there’ve been no possible houses come on the market.

  10. Between June 11 and June 18 I wrote another 20,000-word novella. Honestly don’t know where that came from. Beta reader has it now and I’m taking a step back to review the whole series and figure out where I made continuity errors to fix, since I’m now moving to the revision-across-series. That said, novella #14 is banging on the inside of my head … !

  11. I painted a suitcase!

I’ve been 20 years with the same firm and I was given a choice of gifts to mark the anniversary. I chose a luggage set. A black luggage set. So, suitcases like a bazillion other suitcases. At least the old suitcases were red, which made them a little more distinctive. (They are beyond old, way beyond their end of life. That’s why I chose luggage instead of any of the other options.)

I googled painting fabric suitcases and read and watched everything that actually referred to fabric suitcases. (There’s a serious wealth of information out there if you want to paint an old skool hard-sided suitcase, which kind of drowned out the info I was looking for.) Then I went to Michael’s for gesso and acrylic paint and brushes, and this weekend I painted my black suitcase with bright green and pink dots, squares and stripes. I didn’t always cover the gesso, which is white, with paint, so now I’m thinking of getting black gesso and painting over the bits of white to clean things up. Or I’ll just leave the bits of white, to help my inner perfectionist see that no, everything doesn’t actually need to be perfect.

    1. I love this idea! I write NOT YOURS! on strips of duct tape and plaster a few of those on my suitcase. Not only do people not take it because it looks beat up and, well, it’s NOT THEIRS, but they also laugh, always a good thing. But I still like your artistic approach better.

  12. I am new to Instagram. I took some pictures to post on my iPad to #Workingwednesdaypix but there are problems.

    1. I don’t know what I am doing. (Not sure there is much help for this but ….)

    2. I can’t seem to figure out how to get to #workingwednespix. Instagram will let me follow #workingwednespix but that is it. It does not recognize it as an address for messaging. What am I doing wrong? Any guesses?

    1+

      1. The typo is in my comments. I just tried again on the iPad. I open Instagram. It gives me the home page saying “welcome to Instagram” I have the camera turned on. I do not have the push notifications turned on. I do not have the microphone turned on. I hit the arrow for send new message. I go to search and type in”#workingwednesdaypix” and it says “no account found”.

        1. What I usually do is select a picture from the gallery on my phone. I then choose to share it to Instagram. I put a small caption, and at the end use the tag #workingwednesdaypix

The search is looking for an account, and what you really want to do is tag your picture so the rest of us can find it.

        2. Nancy’s right, Jessie – but have you set up an account? Once you’ve done that, follow Nancy’s instructions, and you should be good. To find the other Working Wednesday pix, just tap the hashtag/link you’ve added to your pic.

          1. Thank you, Thank you, Nancy and Jane. I have now posted a picture of my original white and black 1926 bathroom and the new white and black powder room we installed in 2017, inspired by the original.

Now I can inundate Argh with out of focus pictures of my garden.

  13. The picture this week is of my work in progress – Stanley the cat. He’s been mooching food from us for over a year. My husband built him a shelter to keep him warm in the dead of winter, and I’ve been patiently winning his affection. It took six months before I could touch him, another three before he realized he was hurting me with his scratches. Now I can scratch his head and his belly at the same time, so Progress! The attached picture was from a couple of weeks ago where he was begging for attention. I see it as a step toward him leaping into my lap.

Now, if I could hold him I could take him in for a checkup – I need to make sure he’s not contagious with anything that would hurt my indoor kitties. Someone else in the neighborhood caught him in December and did the TNR bit on him, so I know he’s good on the rabies vaccination until December 2018.

He’s a sweet boy – and I think would love to be able to come inside.

    1. TNR ferals aren’t usually vaccinated, so unless you know for sure that the organization who trapped him does that, he’ll still need to get up to date on shots. Good for you for giving him a home.

      1+

      1. Thanks for the info. I had thought vaccination for rabies was included. I’ll definitely need to get Stanley to the vet as soon as I can!

  14. I did white tiles in my bathroom but added a green line of tiles up near the showerhead level. Just enough to add colour. (And of course now impossible to match with towels because greens are so variable and unfashionable. But that’s okay.) I took advice from one of the Crusies and painted the walls and ceiling peach, because the character said it was flattering. The rest of the house is white (with oak floors).

This week I started working on another story in a series. And my story committee / hindbrain / subconscious keeps interrupting my working day to suggest things like “oo, they go to rescue their sister in case she needs it” and “spices!” and such like. Doesn’t help in writing html documents though.

  15. Want pictures of tub stickies please!

Boss traveling so this week I am working with her by phone, as well as helping my sister with home organization projects and an email blast for her upcoming workshop, and I spent one day setting up practices and spreadsheets for a lady with rental properties. I feel multi-talented and productive!

Tomorrow I will be alone in the office to catch up while playing rock and roll as loud as I want. Barefoot. It will be a good day.

  16. I’m working on making my body stronger and better functioning via physical therapy and home exercises following surgery. I’m seeing improvements, and that makes me all kinds of happy.

I think I’ve turned a corner on this draft of my WIP, and what I want to do is race to the end rather than be at my day job. Unfortunately, I have those darned bills to pay, so I’ll save my racing for after hours.

  17. Started knitting another square, was going to try to read all my library books this month and sew up squares for my last patchwork, but the heart wants what it wants

  18. I went to the doctor today! and made health, and in this order: dropped off specimen for annual colonoscopy test, mammogram, annual visit with GP, blood draw for endocrine doc, made appointment with derm department. All the medical! All done!

  19. My cat worked this morning. We had to put our big old dog down last Friday, she was 15 and her hind legs were so weak, she couldn’t get up on the slick floor, and then eventually had trouble on the grass. We decided it didn’t have to get any worse, so the vet came, we were outside and we were all with her. So, the cat was in the habit of bringing her treats home from the hunt. This morning he dashed in with a small squirrel, and was quite upset that I wouldn’t let him bring it in past the kitchen floor. I hope he figures it out soon, much as I admire his generosity.

Today I spent moving my stuff around in the much smaller space I moved into after selling my house. Yikes, I tried to unburden myself before the sale, but apparently I’m a paper hoarder. I’ve got sooo much paper, and great cards I’ve never sent. And dainty blue stationery and envelopes. Like I write anything that is not on lined paper, otherwise the lines go up and down. A person can thing when they have a nice lined pad and the proper pen…

  20. I have 3 neutral color bathrooms and I highly recommend wallpaper to get away from the sterile look. I posted pictures of two of the bathrooms on #workingwednesdaypix. The third bath is our guest bedroom bath and is more frivolous. I will try to do a posting of that next week. Also my kitchen, which is grey and white. I would just like to say that I did all the woodwork with the final coat of varnish being applied by my husband since I cannot always get air bubbles and brush strokes out but I can sand and shellac like nobody’s business.

  21. Today I spent time prepping for my trip to ALA Annual in New Orleans this weekend. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s but feel warmer. 😅

Over the weekend I was able to work on quilting a quilt. I didn’t piece the top together. I just did the stitching that joins the quilt sandwich. Here’s a link https://instagram.com/p/BkRMi6EBKlZ/ to pictures.

    2. That is lovely.

I know several people going to ALA this weekend. Hope y’all enjoy it!

  22. I made a custom design T-shirt for a friend. Some free-hand painting, some letter stencil painting. Learned that fabric paint really needs like 3-4 coats, and that paper stencils need to be removed while still wet, or they stick to the fabric terribly.
And that my choice of chalk pen might not have been the best choice. But that should wash out.
And now I have way too much excess fabric paint, because I was paranoid about not having enough.

  23. Most of our house has off white walls but that’s because we hang all kinds of folk art on them and anything else would lead to weird color conflicts. It looks anything but sterile.

But as a result each of my bathrooms has COLOR. Mostly blues. Wall tiles floor tiles counters…
