Working Wednesday, May 30, 2018

It’s the day after Memorial Day, which means it’s summer in America.  It’s definitely balmy enough to be summer, even muggy, which bodes ill for August around here.  My weeds are growing lustily, and my latest order from the plant people is sitting by my front door, so that’s my plan of attack for this week, along with unearthing my writing couch that’s been buried for over a year, making dog cookies, giving Mona and Veronica their baths and new collars (Milton got his yesterday), and finishing Nita.

What’re you working on?

  1. I finally started binding my crazy dragon quilt. It’s been sitting there, staring at me for far too long, but I’ve vowed to knock a few things off the long term craft finishing list, and that’s one of them. Finishing reupholstering the beautiful 50s dining set that I bought on ebay is another thing on the list. I’ve done two chairs in a gorgeous white and sunshine yellow, and I need to finish off the other two and the table.

  2. Just this minute, 90 third-year sustainability papers, all graded. Hooray. I am a marking machine. An emotional machine – annoyed that the marking schedule doesn’t allow me to give extra credit to 19 students who printed double sided. It was an assignment on sustainability (I want italics for that). What were the other 71 (not) thinking?

    Some gems though:
‘I was working as a door knocking executive’
‘My job was delivery expert’ (he worked for pizza hut)

And the subtlety of language, the difference between ‘I have made few friends since I moved here’ and ‘I have made a few friends since I moved here’. I hope for her sake it is the latter.

  3. I found lavender plants at the garden center this week and they will be added to the hodgepodge that is our garden.

  4. I woke up in a really bad mood, so I will primarily be working on my attitude. 😉

  5. I sorted my balcony garden yesterday – getting rather frustrated at having to do the actual work inside, since there’s barely room to stand out there. Hopefully will have more salad leaves in a few weeks. And the dahlias I’ve grown from seed are growing like triffids. I might try and take a picture for Instagram, though it’s hard to fit myself with camera out there.

I’ve just bought some ivory card so I can make two focus boards/treasure maps, one for my new home and the other for what I want to create in this new stage of my life. I’m trying to let go of my neurotic fears and allow new good stuff in.

  6. I went to a bunch of medical appointments and have another in Friday. Given my phobia of all things medical, this was huge. I’ve spent several weeks in a state of unwelcome anxiety.

I also worked on a painting still in progress. I’m getting closer to liking it!

  7. Ah, the weekend. I bought mulch Friday afternoon and spent Saturday morning spreading it around the garden. It’s lovely, making the garden, even the previously butchered azaleas, look much, much better. I ended up having to go back and get more mulch to get it all done – and then watched as a bit was washed away in the afternoon thunder storm.

The rest of the weekend was devoted to the two c’s – crafting and cats. I finished putting the binding on big orange (it turned out to be a king size quilt), so that’s done – hooray! I pulled a UFO (a smallish table runner) from my pile and quilted it, and am currently putting the binding on that.

There are three kitties in the house to be amused. The last picture on instagram is of Maggie, who decided I didn’t need to read that book – I should pay attention to her instead. Of course, I obliged. 🙂

  8. I FINALLY finished the neverending chemo cap. Pic at Instagram. Also, some gardening, some brainstorming and lots of playing with kittens and being patient with momcat, which seems to be paying off at last. After two months in captivity, momcat finally let me pat her briefly yesterday and again today. She’ll likely never be a lap cat, and that’s okay, since I already have three lap cats, but it’s important that she come around to being less fearful of humans.

    1. So glad to hear that you are fine with chemo! And that you are making progress with the mama cat.

      1. Sorry, wasn’t clear, you don’t need to worry about me. I have health issues, but not, thankfully, life-threatening ones. I make chemo caps for donation to cancer centers, not to wear myself!

    2. I adopted a mama cat and her two kittens years ago. Mama had probably been abused. She was very timid and always hid when other people were in the house. It took me TWO YEARS to get her to sit on my lap. Then she never wanted to get off 🙂

      1. It’s funny, because momcat seems like she desperately wants to be patted, but then when I do, she’s okay for a second or two and then it’s like she realizes she’s not supposed to like it and she panics and runs away. She seems to be jealous of all the attention her kittens get, but isn’t quite sure what to do with me if I do pay attention. But it’s okay. I’ve got time and patience. My biggest worry is how I’m going to get her into a carrier to take to the vet for spaying.

        1+
        1. Well, she’s in a cage now so she’s not going to get pregnant again. Give her some time maybe?
I think it’s remarkable that she’s letting you pet her this fast. It took Veronica years to come to me to be petted, and she was feral, just a rescue.

        2. We had the same issue with the feral/wild momma cat we had when we took her to the vet. We got her into a carrier by putting on heavy leather/long cuffed gloves, then tossing a towel over her and BACKING her into the carrier. They instinctly try to escape by backing up and she went right in. Of course it put our relationship back a few steps. Good luck!

          1. The old drop-a-towel-over-the-wild-animal works for birds and bats, too, you just have to move fast. The backing part is genius.

  9. Besides getting invoices out and money in, I’m sorting out all the photographs from our trip back up to the Arctic to sort through and clean my mother in law’s home. We own it so it was fraught with high emotion and drama from BIL/SIL. It is not a shrine to my MIL. I found all my old photographs which MIL took while “just looking at the photos.” Also, she had such wonderful old photographs from 1930 on. Wish she was still with us to talk about all the people and times and life. We heard some very funny stories too.

And weeding and planting and cleaning for the summer season.

  10. I am awaiting my new phone so I can load Instagram on it.

I made my work desk neat. This is a major achievement for me.

  11. I’m trying to find work to do at work. I have a very boring and currently very slow job.

I’m also working on getting up the nerve to try to reconnect with an old friend.

I’m also working on figuring out vacation weekends this summer. We’ve got some stuff booked already.

    1. One time my boss asked all the staff in our department to write down all that we do for our job. She only asked that one time and never brought it up again. In the meantime over the years I wrote down any new and exciting new task I was given. By the time I retired I had several pages, just in case because you never know. I always new my worth. Document, document, document!

    2. Connect if you can.

I have spent the last 20 years trying to find my best friend from high school. Life went wacky for her and we grew up in a small town with particularly vicious gossips. She cut herself off from our home town and did not respond when any of her friends sent her mails or let us know when she remarried. And I understand it wasn’t just me, it was everyone. And her family was gone so we couldn’t find her that way.

My husband bought me an ancestry.com membership for Christmas. I typed in her name and her first husband’s name and her son’s name. I also listed her as deceased because Ancestry tries not to let you have easy access to living people. I found her instantly because she had died in 2007 and I wish I had seen her again.

  12. Oh, I forgot, I did a planting lesson on Friday. Seeds of beans, mung and fenugreek planted by the children in little paper pots that they folded themselves.

They’d started to sprout, so we planted it in the ground today. It’s Autumn, min 16°C and max 24°C at present. Sunny during mid day. So we can still plant fast growing items.

  13. I am doing ALL OF THE THINGS. And it feels wonderful. Memorial Day was a working day for me, and because I worked this weekend and then got holiday pay, the rest of the week is light for me. The timing is perfect because I am hanging a show next week at a local eatery. It’s small, but really fun. I got a lot of positive feedback last year. So, mostly I am trying to prep for that. And clean. Always clean.

  14. I busied myself with some more papier maché animals last weekend. Ended up with a blue-and-gold-striped cartoonesque fox (I have tons of those here) and an almost finished simple black and white cat. Somehow the cat got a really thick (or fluffy…) chin, so I’ll have to either redo that part of put some more black clay on its head to make things look more… normal.

Either than that it’s been so dang hot here I haven’t felt like doing nothing much except sit still and read. And eat Ben&Jerry’s ice cream in the middle of the night with Fiancé. Which is… sort of creative, I guess.

    1. I’d love to see the papier-mâché animals! Do you have Instagram? #workingwednesdaypix

      1. No, unfortunately I don’t. I’m concidering getting one though, if only for to post pics of the things I make. I guess my Twitter followers would unfollow me if I kept posting pictures of it on there all the time. Or maybe they won’t, it’s not happening every day after all.

Here’s an old photo of a pink fox, same style as the one I made blue and golden, so you get an idea of what I’m waffling about:

I have approx 1 zillion of these here. I think they are super cute, and they are fun to “pimp” in different colours and patterns. Not all of them are wearing bows (yet). This one was sold withint 2 minutes of it being finished. Flattered? You bet! 🙂

  15. I spent the weekend in the garden, cleaning house, and finally making lots of jewelry. Of course, I haven’t posted pictures to Instagram yet. My bad. I’ll try and remember to put a picture or two up later and come back with a link.

  16. I mowed my lawn Friday after work. Saturday I scrubbed the siding of my house where it had turned green (mold/mildew). I ended up having to use a small brush and hand scrub it as the long handled brush couldn’t get to it enough. Sunday I baked for the local cooperative extension’s herbal bake sale and Monday I dug up and re-worked a couple of garden beds. I would have loved an extra day off to recuperate but someone else already had it off so back to work I went yesterday. The only big task I have left to do is scrape and paint my back deck and that I hope to do this coming weekend.

  17. I weeded in early spring to get ahead of the curve. However, the weeds seem to think that reworked ground and all that open space meant they could procreate like crazy. And I, alas, was not paying attention because I HAD ALREADY WEEDED. So I have spent the last 4 days cleaning the flower beds again so I could plant. Which I mostly did today. There are only about 10 dahlia bulbs which I started early that are still to go in.

At this rate I do not know when I am going to get back to rebuilding the top rockery terrace which I allowed to be come infested with cape fuchsia and is pulling the whole thing apart.

All I can say is that after all this work, my garden had better perform spectacularly or there may be cement in its future.

  18. I spent a lot of the last few days figuring out who to vote for in our local primaries. The federal options are easy; the challenge is that our county just adopted term limits and as a result there are a lot of empty seats and unknowns running for them. I think I have figured out which of six people to choose for county executive but I’m still struggling with picking 4 out of 33 for county council. And I haven’t begun to look at school board.

Also of course gardening, and I did a fair bit of cooking for a Memorial Day party and my son’s favorite meals while he is home—he heads to Argentina with DH who has a work trip for 10 days soon and then heads to Switzerland for his summer job at the end of June. So I’m trying to spoil him while I can.

    2+
    1. My god, you have to pick 4 out of 33? And probably you have only heard of 3 of them and they are people you wouldn’t vote for on a bet. And no one has ever heard of the ones running for school board and at least half of them hate teachers and kids. Being a conscientious voter is not for wimps.

  19. Still cleaning the mess he left (after the unfinished bathroom). I fear my dreams of living a tidy life may have to remain just that!

Picking up a knitting UFO that I’m super keen on finishing, but it’s going to take forever. It’s a circulat shawl that, if your tension is right, is an accurate visual representation of the night sky as seen from the South Pole. I’d put it aside as the bead at the top of the southern cross looks out of place and it’s irking me. I thought I could pop in a life line and rip it back and fix it but it’s such an effort I may have to put on the blinkers and forge ahead.

Dogs are very displeased with the cleaning binge as women who are cleaning are not sitting down and they’d quite like to snuggle.

      1. Oh, I know! Add in the fact that I’m impatient, I’m so into instant (craft) gratification that I usually try and work in worsted (10ply) and up. This one is in fingering (4ply).
It’s for my middle daughter who turns 21 in September, no chance this is her gift….

  20. I’ve been working on a presentation which I gave this morning. I believe it went well. After I was done, I was done and ready to go home. However, it lasts for another 30 minutes.

I’m also working to make sure all that I need to get done for work and committees gets done today as I’m going to be taking vacation for the next 7 business days primarily because I need to use it this month or lose. However, I can really use it.

I had to travel to the conference – a 5 hour ride. This gave me time to work on my hand piecing project. I’m adding the outer row of gold stars, with red “kites” and the green diamonds on the picture at instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BjcvRB4BIa5/ I hope to add another 2 or 3 on the trip back today.

  21. Since last Wednesday I did two biggish yard projects and a long-procrastinated attic project. I have also had a brain turnaround since my vacation and am now WRITING. Courtesy of my job which is in a slow period, am up to 7900 words since last Thursday.
